Social Groups

If you are new to the congregation, consider joining one of our social groups to feel part of our community. For a further list of activities, see the Broad View United web page.

United Church Women

The purpose of the UCW as stated in its constitution is to unite women of the congregation for the total mission of the church and to provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, fellowship and service. Members of the UCW experience bonds of friendship, fellowship and pastoral care.

The UCW has two units: Mildred Mossop and Unity. The Mildred Mossop Unit meets on the second Monday of the month at 10:00 a.m. The Unity Group meets on the third Thursday at noon. Meetings begin with a Devotional, which is preceded or followed by a bag lunch and social time. First Metropolitan members attend Presbytery meetings four times a year.

The UCW supports Community Outreach groups by collecting the following, which may be left in a box across from the church office:

  • eye glasses and cases
  • tabs from pop cans
  • cancelled postage stamps from Canada and other countries. Stamps need to have at least 1/4-inch borders.
  • pens, pencils, etc
All women of the Church are "United Church Women." We invite any and all United Church women to come to a meeting. Click here for more information.

Knitting Group

The Spiritual Care and Wellness committee sponsors a knitting group that makes prayer shawls, prayer scarves and prayer patches. These are used as gifts to celebrate significant occasions: births, special anniversaries, achievements and to comfort and support people during times of illness and bereavement. In addition, clothing and coverings are made for: Cridge Centre for the Family, Women's Transition House, The Compassionate Warehouse, the UCW's Babywear for the Mustard Seed, Jeneece Place etc.

The group meets the second Tuesday of the month from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the church. There is wool, needles, patterns, fun and fellowship to share. For more information, contact Liane Clark or Shirley Chatfield at (250) 388-9401.

Friendship Club

The Friendship Club meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. The club welcomes both singles and couples in the church family. Our motto is "We Care, We Share, We Support Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow." Many speakers have come and addressed topics related to travel, education, health, fitness and financial planning. We go on field trips and picnics around Victoria and occasionally attend live theatre, concerts or go out to dinner. We support our own members with cards and/or flowers during times of sickness or loss. For more information, please contact Marlene Campbell at (250) 382-5954.

Guys' "Water Into Wine" pub group

First Met men meet on the second Tuesday of the month for an evening of conversation and a pint, or beverage of choice. The invitation is open to all men, whether First Met congregants or not.

 See Events for further information.

Women Exploring Spirituality

The Women Exploring Spirituality group meets the fourth Monday of every month from September to June in the Chapel from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. This is a dedicated, faithful group of women exploring their faith with like and open-minded souls. Each year, the group selects a book for the basis of their discussions.

Newcomers are always welcome. You may like to come for a test session to see if this type of faith exploration would appeal to your quest to learn more about the Bible, your personal beliefs and the challenges we encounter daily in living out a faithful Divine call. Contact Bonnie Foskett at 250 479-1439 for more information.
