What is Indigenous law? How is it different from Aboriginal law, or Canadian law? This interactive workshop will introduce the RELAW Project (Revitalizing Indigenous Law for Land, Air, Water) of West Coast Environmental Law. Tohis session will explore ways to support the promotion and enforcement of Indigenous laws to protect our waters, forests, salmon, and the air we breathe.

Resource people:

  • Lindsay Borrows (Chippewas of Nawash First Nation) is a staff lawyer at West Coast Environmental Law where she works on the RELAW project. Lindsay has worked  as a legal support team member for the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • Maxine Hayman Matilpi (JD, LL.M) is a member of the Kwakiutl Nation and also of Ma'amtigila/Scottish/English descent. She is Project Lead for RELAW at West Coast Environmental Law
  • Lana Lowe is Dene from the Fort Nelson First Nation (FNFN), a Treaty 8 nation. She has worked with the RELAW project in her capacity as the FNFN Director of Lands. Lana is currently on leave and pursuing a PhD in Law at the University of Victoria.
