UPDATE from FMUC COUNCIL on OUR PLACE SLEEPING SHELTER in the FELLOWSHIP HALL

OCT.15/15 to MARCH 31/16

On Sept. 20/15, First Met Council passed a motion to partner with Our Place, to create a pilot 7 day a week government funded homeless sleeping shelter for 40 in the Fellowship Hall, 7:00 pm to 7:30 am Oct. 15th/15 to March 31st/16, contingent on the concerns being effectively addressed by a Building and Property Task Group. The direction from council was to explore further with families, stakeholders and the congregation, to determine issues of concern raised and to address them. A letter was sent to CYYAF outlining the proposal and requesting feedback. Several submissions were received. Don Evans, Executive Director of Our Place, has met with our stakeholders to address concerns and document issues. As well, two focus groups were held with congregants with Don Evans present. Questions were raised and responded to and issues documented.

The Building and Property Task Group appointees include Larry McGill, Chair of Building and Property Committee, Cullen Morton – Building Supervisor, Roman Kuroyedov, member of the Building and Property Committee and Clarice Dillman- FMUC Council Co Chair, as point person. They have worked diligently to address the issues. With the help of Don Evans and his staff and Janet Gray, Chair of Outreach, agreement has been reached to trial the resolutions and make adjustments as needed. There is also provision for a 30 day out clause for both parties, if problems cannot be resolved.
