First Metropolitan hosts a nightly shelter in the Fellowship Hall to help Victoria's downtown homeless find a place to sleep. The shelter is run and staffed by Our Place (not First Met) and operates at capacity every night with occasional dips below capacity on warm nights or following cheque-issue days.
"First Met shelter has helped me avoid getting into trouble with the law," says one guest. "It's given me the ability to hook up with advocacy workers and with socialization with other clientele."
The shelter has developed a sense of community among "shelterinos/shelterinas," as those who use the facility call themselves. The arrangement between First Met and Our Place extends over several months at a time so that staff can connect as many people as possible to housing and supports in the community.
Solid relationships between staff and shelter guests make it easier for more people to find longer term housing.
